I’m going to Kansas City. Kansas City here I come

I’m going to Kansas City. Kansas City here I come. They got some crazy little women there, so I’ll fit in just fine. Crazy, meaning: fun, passionate, strong, inspiring! But oh the nerves to get there. I had a mid-air anxiety attack 20-years ago that kept me off planes until 2016. But I’m currently on a plane with the Big Guy, trying to keep my brave up. Which is strange, because the reason for this trip is to launch my book in the city where the story mostly takes place, and the underlying theme is how you shouldn’t let logistics […]

You are They

You are They. That’s what I think whenever I hear someone say “they” should do something about “this.” They, being other people—usually the system—and This, being the current disaster—usually something related to politics. But that’s what I think when I hear that kind of talk. I don’t say it. Not directly. Because just like with my adult children, if I want to encourage them to do something about whatever it is that is making them upset—for my words to have an impact, I have to come in through the back door with them. What I try to say instead is, […]

Preach!

You are They. This is what I always think whenever I hear someone say “they” should do something about “this.” They being other people—usually the system. And This being the current disaster—usually something related to politics. But that’s what I think. I don’t say it. Not directly. Because just like with my adult children, if I want to send a message, I have to come in the back door with it. What I try to say is, “Why are you so upset about this? What would you like done about it? If you were them, how would you fix it? […]

I’ve never been able to be a follower

I’ve never been able to be a follower. Still, I’m shy by nature—something my children would never believe in a hundred million years—because around people that I know, I’m big and vocal and passionate. I’m passionate about the beauty surrounding me, and the things I believe in. Love. Loyalty. Kindness. Righting wrongs. Standing up for children, and also for adults who can’t seem to find their voice, yet desperately need one. It is only because of my husband’s government career and my businesses that I’ve learned how to be an extrovert. Learned how to switch into what I call Diplomat […]

I am not afraid. I was born to do this

I am not afraid. I was born to do this. That’s not me talking, because I am afraid. Always have been. But I’m less afraid now. Part of the reason is that I’ve done a lot of work on myself and have had experiences which required that I either sink or swim. And I chose to swim. It’s also because I read a lot. And if I stay with a book it’s because I resonate with it. I’ve learned a lot from reading about Joan of Arc. Those are her words at the top of the page. I will never […]

Throat-Clenching Fear, Meh

The twelve-year gestation is ready to pop! What began as just some thoughts jotted down on a piece of paper—on a boat on our way over to Europe—is about to be released on May 18. Those family notes turned into the first book in the C’mon Funk Series: May Cause Drowsiness and Blurred Vision, The Side Effects of Bravery. Since the series takes place almost entirely in Kansas City, Funk and I will be in town beginning May 15 to kick it off. There are five events scheduled so far, and we hope to see you around town. Here’s wishing […]
